North Winchester / Park Avenue Flood Alleviation Scheme - consultation

Overview

Winchester City Council is working in partnership with Hampshire County Council, the Environment Agency and Southampton University to develop a flood prevention scheme around the North Walls/Park Avenue area of the City.

This area is within the flood zone and buildings such as St Bedes School, the University of Southampton School of Art and the Leisure Centre are very vulnerable to flooding. In addition once water starts to overflow from this area along Park Avenue then residential properties along this road and beyond in the City Centre are liable to flooding. This area was protected from flooding in 2014 through the use of temporary flood barriers and sandbags walls.

All parties are currently working to line up the necessary funding streams to enable the construction phase of this project to start in April 2016. A prelimary report made to Winchester City Council Cabinet in December 2015 (see link below) agreed to set aside £250,000 for flood alleviation schemes.

Why your views matter

This consultation is directed primarily at local residents and businesses who will be the most affected, but also interested people who use the park. We are seeking their comments and views on the proposed measures including the design and impact of the proposed measures.

The comments received are being considered by officers with a view to modify the design of the flood alleviation scheme if necessary.
