Overview

In January 2018, this council consulted local residents on the shape of parish council governance for West of Waterlooville, Denmead, Southwick & Widley areas. This followed the receipt of a petition from over 200 local residents requesting a review to examine forming a new Parish Council for the West of Waterlooville area.

Four options were presented for consideration. More than 600 people responded with 74% supporting the new Parish Council option.

Options Total % of responses
1. No change to current Parish Councils 52 8.6%
2. New Council formed for the MDA 448 74.2%
3. Move all of MDA into Southwick & Widley PC 82 13.6%
4. Move all of MDA into Denmead PC 22 3.6%

Why We Are Consulting

In light of this response, the City Council has agreed to prepare and publish draft proposals to establish a new parish council for the MDA.  This would accord with the requirements of the relevant legislation to encourage a cohesive and sustainable community with a distinct and recognisable sense of identity.

This consultation therefore seeks the public’s views on;

  • the new Parish Council’s style (it could be a Parish, Town, Neighbourhood or Community council);
  • a name for the new council that reflects its geographic location; and
  • the new council’s precise boundary.

Arrangements for the proposed number of representatives, the elections in 2019, the handover from the current parish councils and the setting of a new precept will also need to be considered.  Although the current parish councils will be key consultee on these matters, the views of the general public will be essential in ensuring we can devise the best arrangements for the local community.

Two open events were held so local people could talk with current community representatives on the emerging proposals. These were held on:

Date Time Venue
Saturday 17 March 2018 10.00am -2.00pm Wellington Vale Care Home, Darnel Road, Waterlooville, PO7 7TY
Monday 19 March 2018 5.00pm - 7.30pm Berewood Primary School, Kentidge Way, Waterlooville, PO7 3BE

This topic was also considered at the West of Waterlooville Advisory Group meeting on Thursday 29 March 2018, 7pm at Wellington Vale Care Home, Darnel Road, Waterlooville, PO7 7TY.
