Overview

View our draft air quality strategy

Air pollution is the most significant environmental threat to public health in the UK. In recent decades, new policies and advances in technology have meant steady improvements in air quality. However, there is still need for action across communities in the UK to improve air quality and safeguard public health, the environment, and the economy.

In Winchester, we have also seen this improvement in air quality and particularly over the last five years. However, as experts including the World Health Organisation advise, any level of air pollution will have an impact on health. By continuing to improve air quality across the whole district and beyond, we have an opportunity to further improve the health of our residents, particularly among older residents, young people and other groups most affected by air pollution.

Our draft Air Quality Strategy sets out how we can improve air quality across the district in line with our council priorities of tackling the climate emergency and making sure residents are living well. We want to go above and beyond national air quality targets to improve public health as much as we can across the district, and we’d like your views on these commitments.
